Welcome to the online version of the Social Science Library:
Frontier Thinking in Sustainable Development and Human Well-Being

A project of

The Global Development And Environment Institute (GDAE)
at Tufts University     in conjunction with
the UN Decade for Education for Sustainable Development.

The Social Science Library (SSL) contains complete bibliographic references for nearly 10,000 journal articles, book chapters, and working papers in the disciplines of Anthropology, Economics, History, Political Science, Social Psychology, Sociology, and Philosophy. The SSL is primarily intended for researchers, students, and policy-makers in less-wealthy countries who are working to promote sustainable development and human well-being. While not attempting complete coverage of any of the disciplines represented, the SSL aims to provide excellent examples and working materials in some relevant areas of each discipline.

A "distributed version" of the SSL, on USB drives and CD-ROMs, is being delivered to numerous libraries in 137 developing countries. For a complete list of the recipient countries, click here.

The distributed version of the SSL includes the complete text of about 3,400 of the documents in PDF format. While our copyright arrangements permit free distribution and copying of the SSL distributed version within the 137 recipient countries, the PDF articles may not be distributed outside of these countries or on the Internet. Thus the online version provided here does not contain any PDF articles. It does, however, contain all references, organized in the same innovative fashion as the distributed version. Thus this web version of the Social Science Library has many potential uses, in classes and for research.
